Registration

In Quebec, a business must be registered with the Business Registrar (Inspecteur général des institutions financières or IGIF).

The registration gives you the right to:

  • Open a commercial bank account
  • Get a GST number
  • Get a QST number
  • Open employer's accounts

The registration must be renewed yearly and fees paid to the Business Registrar's office.

There could be unpleasant consequences if you don't renew your registration, up to striking your business from the register.

You will receive a renewal form each year.  On it is a reference number that must appear on your corporate or self-employed income tax return.

Industry Canada also requires an annual report for federally incorporated companies.  If you don't produce the report (Annex 100), your company could again be stricken from the register.

We can check the status of your business with the Quebec Registrar Office and Industry Canada to avoid the nightmare of seeing your business stricken from the register.
